Do you know which blue paint was used on DS telescopes, and if it is still available ?
ReplyDeleteI have a 20" - but need to rebuild it as it's not really portable, but want to retain a small homage to its origins.
Thanks, Callum
Hi Callum,
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure its Hammerite but not sure of the exact colour but looking at the product page here: http://www.hammerite.co.uk/products/direct_to_rust_metal_paint_hammered_finish.jsp its looks like there is only one blue so its fairly safe to say that its the one.
James
Thanks James,
ReplyDeleteI'll try and get a tin and compare.
Cheers, Callum

ReplyDeleteI have a 12 inch blue Hammerite Dark Star dobsonian. Mirrors need re-silvering everything else perfect still, 26 years later!
ReplyDeleteJust privately purchased a DarkStar12''Dob. Seen much better days but first views seem okay for the price of £ 100.
ReplyDeletePlan to refurb as it would be a shame to see such a beast on the scrap heap. Mirror has small unsilvered patches near edges and a small chip on back edge that is unlikely to deter from image.
Needs a new internal finish of matt black or flocking and dob base has some wood swelling so plenty to do, but certainly saw stripes on Jupiter and 4 jovian moons last night. Lunar craters were clear to see if lacking a little contrast.
Images are soft at edge so will check collimation.
Labels are still attached with manufacturing address in Powys, Wales.
